(town of Lipari, Messina, Sicily)
The island of Lipari, in the Greek language indicated by the name of Meligunis, is the largest archipelago and has about 10,000 inhabitants. The tourist sees since his arrival the fortified town and the Town Hall, established in the former Franciscan monastery. At his feet are perhaps the two most famous bays: Marina Corta, with the Church of the Souls of Purgatory and the seventeenth-century Church of St. Joseph and Marina Lunga, the largest port.
The soil of the island is of volcanic tuff, obsidian and pumice, and its coasts are characterized by cliffs and sea stacks that many face. The oldest rocks dating emerged about 225,000 years ago and volcanic phenomena are now limited to a modest activity in the presence of fumaroles and hot springs, like those of the thermal spring of "Terme di San Calogero".
The presence of pumice, which is still being extracted from the quarries on the island, features many seafood places. Especially between Punta Castagna and Red Cape, the environment is characterized by intense and occasionally blinding white of pumice that makes wonderful backdrops, with colors ranging from turquoise to deep blue.
On 24 August we celebrated St. Bartholomew with fireworks visible from all Aeolian Islands.
Important tourist attraction is the boat ride, thanks to which you can see wild landscapes, wide bays and beautiful backdrops.
The typical crop of Lipari is used to approach the most remote and isolated beaches, or to easily reach the nearby islands of Vulcano and Salina, and finally for fishing (very common one for squid).
The historical importance of the island is testified by the remains of the Acropolis Greek, from the Norman Cathedral and Castle, very interesting sites worth a visit along with the Aeolian Archaeological Museum, surrounded by ancient walls built in the sixteenth century Spanish and housed in several buildings, divided into sections that allow us to reconstruct the history of eolian since prehistoric times, thanks to the remains found in the Aeolian Islands.
